Being more mission based than open-ended, Starcom is a huge RPG game that will take a huge amount of time to complete - and that's if you're already familiar with the genre. Upgrading your ship, selling cargo found in space, and destroying enemy fleets are only a few of the things you'll be doing, so it's a good idea to save as often as you can - which you're able to do at galactic bases.
Controlling your ship and flying through space is a lot easier than it sounds - you won't have to worry about running into other planets or asteroids - just other ships. Although your ship will move quite slowly when the game starts, as you purchase upgrades, it will really start moving later on.
Battles are short and sweet; it doesn't take many hits to destroy an enemy spacecraft, but you can't take that many hits yourself. Repairing your ship is automatic when you enter a star base, but if you die while in combat, it's back to your last save game. Since enemies are so small on the game screen, accuracy can be a problem - but simply upgrading what weapons you have will fix that problem.
Overall, Starcom is a great RPG game for those who like to complete missions and destroy vast amounts of enemies. Although it's easy to get lost in Starcom, there is no shortage of star bases or enemies - so you can just fly off and go rogue - and still have fun, if that's what you're looking for. Keep an eye out for enemies, upgrade your ship as often as possible, and you'll do just fine.
